A Story from Headmaster Luc
My admiration for dogs started way back when, just after my house got robbed when I was a teenager. After the incident, my family adopted two pit bulls and fortunately, that was the end of our intruder problems. However, it was the start of other problems. Our new family dogs wouldn’t let anyone come over.
By the time I was a young adult, my family’s psychotic dogs were a huge reason I decided to quit my job at 7 News and pursue everything and anything to do with dogs in order to understand what exactly made my family dogs insane.
I worked at every dog daycare that would hire me and was obsessed with understanding how dogs socialize in large packs and interpreting their behaviors. Around this time I became great friends with an American bully breeder whose property was overflowing with as many bullies as you can imagine. Not long after, I fell in love with pit bulls specifically. Years later I adopted my big baby Marshall, the OG Atomic dog.
As I was learning more about the body language and behaviors of dogs and progressing through the ranks at dog daycares, I became massively fond of working with the “problem pen” where - you guessed it - the most insane of the daycare goers resided. These dogs taught me to recognize, understand, and respect their energy down to the smallest micro expressions. They also taught me how lightning fast a dog’s matter of conversation is. Taking these lessons into account, I was eventually able to implement order to both of my family’s dogs and to my “problem pen”. That’s when knew it was time to take it to the next step and dive into into the world of dog training.
The connections I made while working at daycares led me to a dog training apprenticeship in 2016 where I studied under a pair of balanced trainers for 2.5 years before being granted the title of a “dog trainer”.
Turns out, it wasn’t a matter of what was making my family’s dogs insane, it was what we weren’t doing for them that we needed to be!
Finally, Atomic Dog University was bred out of my love for dogs, my understanding of their behaviors and needs, and my desire to help other dog owners achieve confident, balanced, and happy dogs!
