A Story from Headmaster Luc Sullivan

When Choosing a dog trainer…I usually tell people this: I’ve had the same doctor my entire life. My parents never got me a pediatrician, they just got me a regular doctor. For my whole childhood and adult life: same guy. My parents could call him up anytime and he would send an x-ray order direct to radiology when I’d break a bone or he’d fill scripts for colds over the phone, just helpful in every way when you needed medical advice. He was a great doctor in practice too, cared about me as a patient, made sure i was healthy and i always felt secure during any health scares knowing he would have a solution. That’s how i think you should choose your dog trainer; get someone who you can have throughout the whole journey. Someone who is accessible  and knowledgeable, with a wealth of solutions, who really wants to help. My name is Luc Sullivan and from puppy training to off-leash, and everything before, after, and in between, I can help educate you to be the best dog owner your dog could ever wish for.  

For the past 10 years I’ve worked as a Dog Trainer in Boston and I’ve worked in the dog industry for 14 years total, with 2 years at the beginning of my career being spent inside large scale dog daycare facilities. I frequented and eventually took over the “Problem Dogs Pen” where I would handle and keep the peace between all the worst-tempered dogs in the building and I fell in love with understanding what drove the so called “problem dogs” to act out. I spent enough time with those dogs to realize their problem behaviors were more often an expression of some larger needs or structure which they were lacking. After coming to these conclusions alone in the back pens of a dog daycare facility I figured I needed a guide to learn more.

So I began apprenticing under a professional trainer learning balanced training methods for nearly 2 years before i was finally handed a client of my own. Thus began my professional dog training career where i trained all sorts of behaviors into and out of dogs. From bite work to sit commands I’ve covered it all and have the experience teaching both humans and dogs how to attain these behaviors reliably and successfully. The same goes for extinguishing behaviors from resource guarding to leash pulling, I’ve taught all sorts of owners and dogs how to stop an enormous number of behaviors by; using a specially tailored approach, treating each case individually, asking for what is reasonable to expect from your experience level, and considering the owners wants and goals as well. The best training method is one that is realistic and consistent and that is what i love developing for my clients.

A lot of people in the dog training industry “like animals better than people” and it unfortunately shows in the way they go about teaching people. Personally, I love people- like a dog loves people. I am very passionate and excited to share my knowledge and take the time to listen to the uniqueness of your situation, comfort level with training, and hearing all necessary details. It matters having a trainer who wants to teach YOU, not train the dog for you and leave you holding the reins when you don’t know how to steer. I am passionate to make sure you truly understand the what’s, whys and how’s and all the other questions you might have about a training plan before it’s even laid out.

After we begin training we might be smooth sailing OR we could experience… the dreaded….. Elusiveness of Dog Training. This is another area I will help you navigate. If our current method needs a rehash, change, tweak, pivot, audible or any other update to a plan whose execution just ain’t cutting it, I have any number of methods at our disposal to try on until one fits. There is truly never an end to how much information you can take in and different methods of training, and studies on how dogs work, are constantly updating. This amount of information can be confusing when you have an issue with your own dog and aren’t sure how to go about fixing it when the plan isn’t going… well… according to plan. Being accessible and available for problem solving is a big highlight for me when helping owners.

Considering all of this, I created Atomic Dog University to stand out from the crowd and create an alumni of well educated AND well equipped owners. I’m proud to offer elite education to all experience levels and provide the best possible dog training solutions to ANY AND ALL TYPES of issues using a personalized approach. ALL experience levels are welcome and wanted here at Atomic Dog University.
